How do crystal-for-intention comparisons work?
In traditional crystal healing, no single stone fits every intention. Each comparison page picks the five most-trusted stones for a single intention, anxiety, sleep, love, money, and ranks them by traditional attribution, ease of use, and the specific concern each one meets best.
When you cup a stone in your palm for the first time, you don't really know what it does until you've held it next to a different stone for the same intention. That is the entire idea of intention-based crystal selection, not "which crystal is best" in some abstract sense, but "which crystal meets this concern for this person, here, today." In my practice, I rarely hand a client a single stone. I hand them two or three and ask which one they keep coming back to. The choice that arrives before you can explain it is the one worth noticing.
Crystal Bible author Judy Hall, the most-cited modern crystal healer, opens her ranking of anxiety stones with Lepidolite, but she names Amethyst and Black Tourmaline within the same paragraph because the reasoning is different. Lepidolite is for diffuse, generalized anxiety. Amethyst is for racing thoughts. Black Tourmaline is for environment-triggered anxiety. According to metaphysical tradition (as cataloged by author Melody in Love Is in the Earth, the field's other foundational reference), no stone is universally "the best." There is only "best for this kind of anxiety," "best for this kind of sleep," "best for this stage of grief."
That is what these comparison pages are. Each one picks the five most-trusted stones for a single intention, then ranks them, not arbitrarily, but by traditional attribution, ease of use, beginner-friendliness, and the specific concern each one meets best. The way these stones meet you is rarely the same; the comparisons make the difference legible. For the broader index of intentions and a free crystal-matching quiz, start at crystals by intention.
All 15 Comparisons
Each comparison ranks five crystals for a single intention, the top pick, the budget choice, the beginner-friendliest, the most aesthetically pleasing, and the best for layering with other stones. Click any intention below for the full head-to-head.
How These Comparisons Are Built
Every comparison follows the same structure, so you can move between them and know what you are looking at. The five stones are selected by triangulating three sources: Judy Hall's Crystal Bible rankings, Melody's Love Is in the Earth attributions, and the modern practitioner consensus among working crystal healers. If a stone shows up in all three sources for a given intention, it is in the top five.
The reviews are written in Cassandra's voice, sensory, descriptive, never medical. Each review names the specific concern the stone meets best, the way it feels in the palm, the chakra it traditionally pairs with, and the practical care notes (which stones cannot be watered, which fade in sun). The way these stones meet you is the heart of the review, not abstract claims about energy frequencies.
The ranking reflects the order I would hand stones to a client in a session. Position 1 is the top overall pick, the stone I would reach for first if you described the intention to me cold. Position 2 is usually the next-best alternative for a specific shade of that concern. Positions 3 through 5 fill out the comparison: the budget choice, the beginner-friendliest, the most aesthetically pleasing, the best for layering with other stones. The comparison-dimension box at the top of each page makes this explicit.
The "what to avoid" section is non-negotiable. In my practice, I have seen more harm done by crystals being soaked in water that destroys them, Selenite, Calcite, Lapis Lazuli, Malachite, than by any other practice. Every comparison page names the care warnings for the specific stones it ranks. According to Judy Hall, the mistake is almost always assuming all crystals are interchangeably durable. They are not.

From Intention to Chakra
Every intention these comparison pages cover maps to one or two of the seven chakras in traditional crystal healing. Anxiety lives in the third eye and crown (Amethyst, Selenite) when it is mental, and in the root and sacral (Black Tourmaline, Smoky Quartz) when it is felt rather than thought. Love work happens at the heart (Rose Quartz, Rhodonite). Money work happens at the solar plexus (Citrine, Pyrite, Tiger's Eye). Knowing which chakra your intention lives in is the fastest way to choose between competing stones.
If you want to see your own chakra balance before choosing a stone, take the free chakra test. The results will tell you which energy center is most asking for attention, and the comparison page for that chakra's intention will tell you which stone meets it. Many people find this two-step approach, chakra first, intention second, gives them a stone that lasts longer than the impulse purchase.
