What is a birthstone?

In the modern birthstone tradition, your birthstone is the gem your birth date is paired with. This finder cross-references three lineages at once, your birth month, your zodiac sign, and your day of the week, so you can hold every stone your date carries and choose the one that resonates.

Select your birth month to discover your traditional, modern, and alternative birthstones.

The tradition

What Is a Birthstone?

Birthstones are gemstones traditionally associated with your birth month, zodiac sign, or day of the week. The practice of wearing a personal stone dates back thousands of years, the Breastplate of Aaron described in the Book of Exodus contained twelve stones representing the twelve tribes of Israel, and many scholars connect these to the twelve months of the year. The modern birthstone list was standardized by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912, though many cultures maintain their own traditional associations.

How it works

Three Ways to Find Your Birthstone

By Month

The most widely recognized system. Each calendar month has a primary birthstone (following the modern American Gem Society list) along with traditional and alternative options. This is the birthstone system most people are familiar with from jewelry stores and birthday traditions.

By Zodiac Sign

Zodiacal birthstones are chosen based on the energetic affinity between a crystal and the qualities of your astrological sign. A Scorpio stone supports transformation and depth, while an Aries stone fuels courage and initiative. These associations draw from both Western astrology and traditional crystal healing practice.

By Day of the Week

The least well-known but perhaps oldest system. Each day of the week is ruled by a planet (Monday = Moon, Tuesday = Mars, etc.), and each planet has stones that carry its frequency. If you know the day you were born, this tradition adds another layer of personal crystal connection.

In practice

How to Use Your Birthstone

Your birthstone is a starting point, not a limitation. Many people find that wearing or carrying their birthstone creates a subtle sense of alignment, like wearing a color that flatters you. In the crystal healing tradition, your birthstone resonates with your natural energy signature, potentially amplifying your strengths and supporting areas where you seek growth. You might wear it as jewelry, keep a tumbled stone in your pocket, place it on your bedside table, or use it as a focal point during meditation.

Remember that birthstone traditions vary across cultures, there is no single “correct” birthstone. Trust your intuition. If you feel drawn to an alternative stone more than the primary one listed for your month or sign, honor that connection. The best crystal for you is the one that feels right when you hold it.
