About Crystal
I didn't come to crystals through a book. I came to them through my grandmother's bowl of polished river stones, which sat on the kitchen windowsill of every house she ever lived in. She told me, when I was maybe seven, that you could hold one in your palm and ask it to keep something for you, a worry, a wish, an apology you couldn't say out loud. That's still, all these years later, the most accurate description of crystal practice I've heard.
The years since have been books, certainly. According to Judy Hall in The Crystal Bible (2003), crystal practice is a lineage you inherit rather than invent, and that framing shaped how I read. Melody in Love is in the Earth (1995) describes the same lineage but emphasizes the somatic side: hold the stone first, look up the meaning second. In the traditional metaphysical tradition I work inside, both readings are correct. And in the Ayurvedic gemology tradition, every Sanskrit ratna shastra text my interlibrary loan would let me hold for fourteen days adds a third layer, planetary correspondence, that the Western canon largely ignores.
What I write at CrystalStones.com is practical, sensory, and honest. I won't tell you a stone will cure your anxiety, it won't, and saying so does real harm to people who need real care. According to the crystal-healing tradition as Hall and Melody describe it, stones support emotional states; they do not treat clinical conditions. I will tell you what crystal healers across many traditions have associated with which kinds of energy, what it feels like to hold a stone, and how to set up a simple ritual that respects both the tradition and your own life. Crystals are not magic. They're a way of paying attention.

How Crystal works
Every stone I write about, I hold first. Sometimes for an afternoon, sometimes for a season. The descriptions on this site try to capture the somatic experience of working with a crystal, how it warms in the hand, how heavy it sits, whether it asks for stillness or movement. That's the part you can't get from a properties chart.
I cross-reference traditions deliberately. The Vedic ratna shastra has a lot to say about red coral that the Western metaphysical literature largely ignores. Native American and indigenous stone-keeping practices are not my tradition, so I cite them only when I'm sourcing from practitioners within those communities. When a stone has competing meanings across traditions, I name the disagreement instead of flattening it.
And I refuse the medical claim. Crystals support emotional states; they do not cure anxiety, depression, illness, or anything else. Every page on this site is written with that line in mind, and if you see me even brushing near it, hold me to it.

Melody, Love Is in the Earth (1995)
Melody's encyclopedia is the most thorough modern compendium of crystal meanings in English. I use it as a starting point, then triangulate against older sources before publishing anything.
Judy Hall, The Crystal Bible (Volumes 1 to 3, 2003 to 2013)
Hall is widely cited because she's clear and careful. Where Hall and Melody disagree, I usually side with Hall.
Anodea Judith, Wheels of Life (1987)
The standard modern Western reference on the chakra system. Judith is where I go for the chakra-stone mapping context, and she is honest about which parts of the modern chakra picture are Western overlays on the Hindu tradition.
Caroline Myss, Anatomy of the Spirit (1996)
Myss reads the chakras alongside the Christian sacraments and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. I do not adopt every correspondence, but her cross-tradition framing keeps my chakra writing from treating one lineage as the only map.
Traditional metaphysical sources (oral and published)
Much of the working knowledge of crystal practice lives in lineages passed teacher-to-student. I credit the lineage when I know it, and I name it as 'tradition' when I don't, never as my own discovery.
Varahamihira, Brihat Samhita (gem chapters) and the Garuda Purana gem sections
The Sanskrit gemological tradition (ratna shastra) is older and more systematized than most Western crystal writing. These are the named classical texts behind it, and they inform how I think about ruby, pearl, coral, and the planetary correspondences of stones.
