A published almanac grades the day for everyone at once. That is its job, and it does it honestly, which is why every date in our reports prints the same public facts. But the classical sources are unambiguous that the day must be matched to the person, and a printed table has never seen your chart. On the zodiac layer alone, each day clashes one of the twelve animal signs, so roughly one reader in twelve meets a personal clash (沖 chōng) on any date a generic list recommends. The day-pillar checks catch more cases still.

What Date Selection (擇日 Zé Rì) Actually Is

Date selection (擇日 zé rì) is the classical Chinese discipline of choosing a day whose published pattern supports the act you intend: a wedding, a move into a new home, a first day of trade, a signature, a journey. The classical sources describe it as a scholarly craft, systematized in the Qing imperial compendium 協紀辨方書 (Xié Jì Biàn Fāng Shū) and carried to households through the annual 通勝 (Tōng Shèng), the almanac families still keep by the door.

Every day in the almanac carries a fixed set of facts: its stem-branch pillar in the sixty-day cycle, its Day Officer from the Twelve Day Officers (建除十二神 jiàn chú shí èr shén), its mansion from the 28 Mansions (二十八宿 èr shí bā xiù), its virtue stars and breaker stars, and the zodiac animal it clashes. Those facts are public, deterministic, and identical in every honest almanac, which is why our reports print them for every recommended date: you can verify each one yourself.

The second half of the discipline is personal. The classical sources describe the day as chosen for the person acting, which means computing the Four Pillars chart (八字 bā zì) from the birth date and checking every candidate day against it. How Our Selections Are Computed

Every selection is computed, not curated. The engine derives your Four Pillars from your birth details, grades every day in your window on the almanac layer, and then removes, outright, any day that fails a hard check against your chart: a personal clash (沖 chōng), a Year Breaker (歲破 suì pò), a Month Breaker (月破 yuè pò), or one of the Ten Evils Great Defeat days (十惡大敗). Hard rejects always override positives; a clashing day is excluded no matter how well it scores.

In Wu Xing terms, the ranking then favours days that reinforce the element your chart needs (用神 yòng shén). The classical sources describe favourable windows, never guarantees, so when no day in your window clears every check, the report says so plainly and recommends widening rather than dressing up a weak date.

The Twelve Day Officers (建除十二神)

The officers rotate through the calendar in a fixed order keyed to the day and month branches, and they do the first sorting in every classical date grade. The classical sources describe each officer as a kind of motion the day carries.

Yellow Path and Black Path Days (黃道 and 黑道)

Alongside the officers, the almanac assigns each day one of twelve rotating day spirits. Six belong to the yellow path (黃道 huáng dào) and mark broadly favourable days; six belong to the black path (黑道 hēi dào) and mark days the tradition reserves for routine matters. The famous phrase 黃道吉日 (huáng dào jí rì, a yellow path lucky day) comes from this cycle.
