Lunar Cycles Guide
What are lunar cycles?
The moon's rhythm moves in nested cycles: 13 lunations per year, the eight sabbats of the Celtic Wheel of the Year, and your personal lunar return. Drawing on Yasmin Boland's Moonology and Demetra George's Mysteries of the Dark Moon, lunar work is about listening, not prophecy.
Your body remembers the moon. Long before clocks and calendars, long before electric light, every culture on this earth lived inside the lunar rhythm. In the earth-based lunar tradition, the moon’s rhythm asks us to move in cycles, to grow, to peak, to release, to rest, and to begin again. Modern circadian science is only beginning to catch up to what indigenous earth-based traditions have always known: that the body is not a machine running on linear time. The body is a tide.
Many cultures honor this with parallel practices. In the Wiccan tradition, the wheel of the year tracks eight solar and lunar festivals, and according to Janet and Stewart Farrar in A Witches’ Bible (1981), each sabbat carries its own ritual logic. According to Yasmin Boland in Moonology (2016), the eight phases of the lunar cycle each ask something different of a practitioner; Boland describes the new moon as the seed and the full moon as the harvest. Jill Pyle’s Moon Mysteries traces the moon goddess archetypes across the Mediterranean, the Celtic isles, and the Americas. Demetra George in Mysteries of the Dark Moon (1992) describes the often-skipped dark-moon phase as the deepest part of the cycle. The cycle suggests that this remembering is not nostalgia, it is recalibration.
The full moon has a long reputation for registering before it can be named, and the new moon an equally long one for broken sleep. Set an intention to track this for one cycle, about twenty-nine and a half days, the length of a lunar cycle, and notice. Pair the practice with our moon phase tool and our pillar moon guide. After a single cycle, the lunar rhythm often starts to feel like coming home to a place you have never been.

Moon in Each Sign
The moon moves through one zodiac sign every two to three days, and what it brings up depends on the sign. The cycle suggests these twelve pages as a kind of monthly almanac: which sign the moon is in tells you what to plant on the new moon and what to harvest on the full.

Lunar Rituals and Practices
The moon's rhythm asks us to do less, more often. These short practices fit inside an ordinary life, no special candles required, no perfect altar. Just attention.
Crystal Companions for Lunar Work
Three stones that the moon's rhythm asks for, again and again. Many cultures honor this with parallel practices, and these three stones appear across nearly all of them.
Lunar Companion
Moonstone
Moonstone announces itself before any label does, glowing from within the way the moon does, and many cultures honor this stone for cycles, transitions, and the journey of feminine intuition. The moon's rhythm asks us to soften, and moonstone teaches that softness.
Lunar Companion
Selenite
Named for Selene, the Greek moon goddess. This stone literally carries the moon's name, set a piece of selenite outside under tonight's moonlight and the cycle suggests you'll feel the energy shift in the room by morning. Never water it; the moon already provides the cleansing.
Lunar Companion
Labradorite
For dark moons, eclipses, and the in-between phases, labradorite flashes only when light meets it at the right angle, the way intuition flashes only when you're quiet enough to notice. This season invites the kind of inner work labradorite supports.
Frequently Asked Questions
What people most often ask Selene about moon work, lunar rituals, and crystal companions.
What are lunar cycles?
The moon's rhythm, 13 lunations per year, the eight sabbats of the Celtic Wheel of the Year, and your personal lunar return. Drawing on Yasmin Boland's Moonology and earth-based traditions, lunar work is about listening to the cycle, not predicting it.
What is today's moon phase?
Today's exact moon phase, illumination percentage, and the ritual it invites are all on the Moon Phase Today tool. The data is calculated from VSOP87/DE-440 ephemeris, the same source professional observatories use.
How do I work with the new moon and full moon?
In Yasmin Boland's framing in Moonology, the new moon is the time to set intentions and plant seeds; the full moon is the time to release what no longer serves. Each phase has a traditional ritual and a crystal pairing in our moon phase guides.
What crystals are best for moon work?
Moonstone for cycles and transitions, Selenite (literally named for the Greek moon goddess) for cleansing under moonlight, and Labradorite for dark moons and eclipses. The Crystal Cassandra encyclopedia covers each in depth.
Are lunar predictions accurate?
Selene does not predict events. Lunar tools at CrystalStones.com describe traditional ritual practice and the body-cosmos rhythms that earth-based, Wiccan, and Vedic traditions have observed. This is for self-reflection, not prophecy.
