How to spot real turquoise
Real turquoise (CuAlβ(POβ)β(OH)βΒ·4HβO) is a copper-aluminum phosphate with hardness 5-6 and characteristic matrix veining. Most 'turquoise' on the market is dyed howlite (matrix is wrong), 'block turquoise' (crushed turquoise in resin), or stabilized natural (real but resin-impregnated for stability). True untreated turquoise is rare and expensive.
Hold a piece of turquoise to indirect daylight and look at the matrix first, that's the dark webbing of host rock that runs through the blue. Real turquoise matrix is irregular, three-dimensional, and runs through the stone rather than across the surface. Dyed howlite shows a much more uniform spiderweb pattern that often sits on the surface like ink on paper. Why Turquoise Gets Faked
Authentic untreated 'high-grade' turquoise from premier mines (Sleeping Beauty in Arizona, Lone Mountain in Nevada, Persian Nishapur) has appreciated dramatically since the 2010s, many premier American mines are now closed, capping authentic supply forever. A high-grade Sleeping Beauty cabochon can run $50-$300 per stone; an equivalent dyed howlite cabochon costs the seller less than a dollar to produce.
The other major dynamic is the gray area of 'stabilization.' True untreated turquoise is often too soft and porous for jewelry use, so up to 90% of turquoise on the global market is stabilized, impregnated with epoxy resin to harden it and stop color from changing. Stabilized natural turquoise is legitimate when disclosed, but the line between 'stabilized natural' and 'reconstituted (powder + resin)' and 'block turquoise (crushed + resin)' gets blurred by sellers who don't disclose treatment level.
Visual Tells: What Real Turquoise Looks Like
These are the visual signatures many people learn to recognize after handling a few authentic specimens. In my practice, the combination of these tells, not any single one alone, is what makes the difference between an educated guess and a confident read.
- Real turquoise has irregular, three-dimensional matrix veining, the dark webbing has depth and runs through the stone.
- Dyed howlite matrix is uniformly thin and webbed, often sitting on the surface like spiderweb lines.
- Real turquoise color ranges from sky-blue to robin's-egg to green-blue; uniform 'pure' bright blue across an entire piece is suspicious.
- Block turquoise often shows artificially perfect surfaces with no natural variation in tone or matrix density.
- Authentic high-grade specimens often have a slight color variation across the stone (lighter and darker zones).
- Real turquoise weight is moderate, denser than howlite but not as heavy as malachite.
- Reconstituted/block turquoise has surface that appears chalky or 'too smooth' under magnification.
Hands-On Tests You Can Do
These tests can be done at home with simple tools. None of them is gemological certification, for definitive identification, consult a qualified gemologist. But for consumer-level confidence, the combination of two or three tests is usually sufficient.
1. Acetone swab test
Easy- What you need:
- Pure acetone (nail polish remover) and a white cotton swab
- How to do it:
- Dampen the swab with acetone, press firmly on an inconspicuous spot for 10 seconds. Examine the swab.
- What to look for:
- Real turquoise leaves no color on the swab. Dyed howlite or dyed magnesite transfers blue or blue-green pigment, visible on the cotton. Stabilized natural turquoise may leave faint residue from the resin impregnation but no color.
- Reliability:
- Reliable on its own for catching dyed substitutes.
2. Matrix pattern inspection
Easy- What you need:
- Good light and a 10x loupe (optional but helpful)
- How to do it:
- Examine the matrix (dark veining) in the stone. Note its pattern, depth, and how it relates to the surrounding blue.
- What to look for:
- Real turquoise matrix is irregular and three-dimensional, it follows the original host rock structure. Dyed howlite matrix is a fine spiderweb pattern that's uniformly thin across the entire stone. Block turquoise often has no matrix at all, or matrix that looks painted on.

- Reliable on its own with practice.
3. Hot-needle test (on a chip only)
Expert- What you need:
- A sewing needle, a candle or lighter, and a small chip
- How to do it:
- Heat the needle red-hot. Touch briefly to an inconspicuous chip. Smell the result.
- What to look for:
- Real natural turquoise produces no significant smell. Block turquoise (crushed + resin) produces a slight burning-plastic smell. Pure plastic imitations produce a strong acrid burnt-plastic odor. WARNING: only use on chips, never display pieces.
- Reliability:
- Diagnostic for plastic vs natural, destructive, use sparingly.
4. Hardness scratch test
Moderate- What you need:
- A steel knife and a copper coin
- How to do it:
- On an inconspicuous edge, try to scratch the stone with a copper penny (Mohs 3), then a steel knife (Mohs 5.5).
- What to look for:
- Real turquoise is Mohs 5-6, a copper penny will not scratch it, and a steel knife may or may not depending on hardness. Dyed howlite is Mohs 3.5, both will scratch it. Plastic imitations are very soft and a fingernail can sometimes scratch.

5. Provenance and mine disclosure

- Willingness to ask
- How to do it:
- Ask the seller which mine the turquoise is from, and whether it's natural, stabilized, or reconstituted.
- What to look for:
- Reputable American turquoise comes from named mines: Sleeping Beauty (Arizona), Kingman (Arizona), Lone Mountain (Nevada), Royston (Nevada), Bisbee (Arizona), and others. Persian turquoise comes from Nishapur. Sellers who can name the mine and disclose treatment level are far more trustworthy than those who offer only 'natural turquoise' as a description.

- Reliable on its own as a seller-trust signal.
Most Common Fakes and Substitutes
According to traditional crystal healing literature and gemological practice, these are the substitutes most often encountered when turquoise is misrepresented. Some of these are legitimate stones in their own right, the issue is mislabeling, not the stone itself.
Dyed howlite or dyed magnesite (most common)

Use a recognized gemological laboratory. The major ones in the United States are GIA (Gemological Institute of America), AGS (American Gem Society), and AIGS in Bangkok for Asian-market stones. Each operates by mail-in submission.
Typical cost: $50-$200 for standard certification depending on stone, complexity, and turnaround. GIA lab reports are the global gold standard.
For moderate-value pieces ($30-$200)
Visit a local gem & mineral show or established lapidary. Many reputable dealers will run a refractive-index check or specific-gravity test on-site as a courtesy, particularly if you are considering buying from them. Established rock shops with multi-decade reputations are also reliable.

Why does my turquoise color change over time?
Untreated natural turquoise is porous and absorbs skin oils, lotions, and moisture, which can deepen or shift its color over years of wear. This is normal and considered desirable patina by collectors. Stabilized turquoise resists color change because the resin seals the surface. If your turquoise dramatically changes color or fades, it may be dyed rather than naturally colored.
Can I cleanse turquoise with water?
