General Testing Methods

Most fake crystals fail not on one test but on three at once, they are too perfect, too light, and too warm. According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the four most reliable at-home indicators for distinguishing natural mineral specimens from imitations are: visible inclusions, density (weight relative to size), thermal conductivity (the 'cool feel'), and surface hardness measured against the Mohs scale. None of these tests alone is conclusive. Used together, they catch the vast majority of mass-market fakes.

In my practice, I encourage clients to stay with a stone until they have stopped wanting it and still want it, if the seller will allow it. Hold this stone and notice, does it warm in your hand the way plastic does, or does it stay cool? Does it feel heavier than it looks? Are the inclusions too symmetrical to be natural?
