How to spot real tanzanite

Tanzanite is the gem-quality blue-violet variety of zoisite, found only at the Merelani Hills in Tanzania near Mount Kilimanjaro. Real tanzanite shows distinctive trichroism, three colors visible from different angles: blue, violet, and burgundy/brown. Nearly all natural tanzanite is heat-treated to enhance blue (disclosed). The most common fake is synthetic forsterite.

Tanzanite has the most geographically limited origin of any gem-quality stone, it occurs in commercial quantities at exactly one location worldwide, the Merelani Hills in northern Tanzania at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. The stone was discovered there in 1967 and named by Tiffany & Co., which became its primary commercial promoter. The trichroism is what separates real tanzanite from the most common fake (synthetic forsterite): hold a real piece to light from different angles and you'll see three distinct color zones, blue, violet, and a warm burgundy or brown. Synthetic forsterite typically shows only two colors and weaker pleochroism. In my practice, this single test catches most fakes within thirty seconds.

Why Tanzanite Gets Faked

Authentic tanzanite commands premium pricing, fine-grade pieces run $400-$1,200+ per carat for jewelry-quality stones, and exceptional collector pieces command much more. The single-source nature of the deposit creates inherent scarcity, and the Tanzanian government's tight regulation of mining and export has further constrained supply. Some industry estimates project mine depletion within the next 20-25 years, making remaining stock genuinely investment-grade.

The most common substitute is synthetic forsterite (laboratory-grown magnesium iron silicate), which can be produced with blue-violet coloration that resembles tanzanite at arm's length. Synthetic forsterite costs the producer a fraction of natural tanzanite pricing and is sold in costume jewelry and lower-tier crystal markets as 'tanzanite' or with vague 'blue gemstone' labels. Glass imitations exist primarily in fashion jewelry. Heat treatment of natural tanzanite to enhance the blue color is industry standard, over 95% of tanzanite on the market is heat-treated, and this is fully disclosed within the legitimate industry.

These tests can be done at home with simple tools. None of them is gemological certification, for definitive identification, consult a qualified gemologist. But for consumer-level confidence, the combination of two or three tests is usually sufficient.

1. Trichroism inspection (the primary test)

Hold the stone up to bright indirect light and rotate it through different angles. View it from the top, the side, and at oblique angles.
What to look for:
Real tanzanite shows three distinct colors at different viewing angles: a clear blue, a clear violet, and a warm burgundy or brown. The trichroism is the single most diagnostic feature. Synthetic forsterite typically shows two colors (blue and violet) but lacks the warm third color. Glass shows no color change at all.

2. Gemological certificate verification

How to do it:
Request the original gemological certificate (typically GIA, AGS, or Tanzanian Gemological Authority). Verify online with the issuer.
What to look for:
Authentic high-value tanzanite over 1 carat is typically certified. The certificate should list refractive index, specific gravity, treatments (heat treatment should be disclosed), and origin. Forged certificates exist but are catchable through issuer verification.
Reliability:
Reliable on its own when issuer is independently verified.

3. Refractive index test (gemologist only)

What to look for:

4. Hardness scratch test

How to do it:
Tanzanite is Mohs 6.5-7. A skilled gemologist can test on an inconspicuous edge.
What to look for:
Real tanzanite resists scratching from steel (Mohs 5.5) but can be scratched by quartz (Mohs 7) and harder. Glass is softer (Mohs 5.5). However, hardness testing on a faceted gem is destructive and not recommended outside of a gemological context.

Use with another test, destructive, not recommended for jewelry pieces.

Many people find that one certified tanzanite from a verified dealer is far more meaningful, and more financially sound, than multiple uncertified pieces of unclear origin.

This guide recommends professional gemological verification for higher-value pieces. Below is the practical path most consumers use, including realistic price ranges.

For higher-value pieces ($200+)

Use a recognized gemological laboratory. The major ones in the United States are GIA (Gemological Institute of America), AGS (American Gem Society), and AIGS in Bangkok for Asian-market stones. Each operates by mail-in submission.

Typical cost: $50-$200 for standard certification depending on stone, complexity, and turnaround. GIA lab reports are the global gold standard.

For moderate-value pieces ($30-$200)

Visit a local gem & mineral show or established lapidary. Many reputable dealers will run a refractive-index check or specific-gravity test on-site as a courtesy, particularly if you are considering buying from them. Established rock shops with multi-decade reputations are also reliable.

Typical cost: free to $20 for an informal in-person identification. Mineral show season (spring and fall in most US regions) is the best time.

A note on jewelry-store appraisals: these are not the same as gemological certification. Most retail jewelry appraisals are valuation for insurance, not identification. If a piece's identity is in question, ask specifically for an identification report from a graduate gemologist (G.G.) credentialed by GIA or equivalent, not a retail appraisal.
