The energetic properties associated with the crystals are nearly identical (cleansing, clarity, lunar association), so the practical distinction matters less than the mineralogical accuracy.
Visual Tells: What Real Selenite Looks Like
These are the visual signatures many people learn to recognize after handling a few authentic specimens. In my practice, the combination of these tells, not any single one alone, is what makes the difference between an educated guess and a confident read.
- Selenite proper is transparent or translucent, you can see light through it clearly, sometimes with visible internal crystalline structure.
- Satin spar is fibrous and silky, it shows parallel fibers that produce a pearly chatoyancy when moved in light.
- Both are very soft, Mohs hardness 2, easily scratched by a fingernail.
- Both feel slightly warm to the touch compared to harder crystals.
- Selenite proper often forms in sharp angular crystals or 'fishtail' twins.
- Satin spar forms in fibrous masses, typically cut into wands, towers, or polished slabs.
- Both dissolve slowly in water, they should never be cleansed by water immersion.
Hands-On Tests You Can Do
These tests can be done at home with simple tools. None of them is gemological certification, for definitive identification, consult a qualified gemologist. But for consumer-level confidence, the combination of two or three tests is usually sufficient.
1. Transparency inspection

- How to do it:
- Hold the piece up to a strong light source and observe how light passes through.
- What to look for:
- Selenite proper transmits light clearly with visible internal crystalline structure. Satin spar transmits light as a glowing silky white but shows the parallel fiber structure. Both let light through, but the quality is different.

2. Fiber pattern check (for satin spar)
Easy- What you need:
- Good light and possibly a loupe
- How to do it:
- Examine the surface and any cleavage edges for fibrous structure.
- What to look for:
- Satin spar shows distinct parallel fibers, like silk or hair laid in alignment. Move the piece in light to see the chatoyancy 'rolling' across the surface. Selenite proper lacks this fibrous structure and instead shows angular crystal planes.

3. Hardness check (very gentle)

- A fingernail
- How to do it:
- On an inconspicuous edge, very gently attempt to scratch with a fingernail.
- What to look for:
- Both selenite proper and satin spar are Mohs 2, easily scratched by a fingernail. If the piece is significantly harder, it's not gypsum. Common substitutes are very rare since gypsum is so cheap; the main 'substitution' is acrylic or resin imitations in mass-market jewelry, which are also soft but feel different.

- Place a drop of water on an inconspicuous chip. Observe over 5-10 minutes. WARNING: don't do this on display pieces, gypsum can be permanently damaged by water.
- What to look for:
- Real gypsum (both selenite and satin spar) will show slight surface dissolution where water sits, the surface may become slightly chalky or rough over 5-10 minutes. Plastic imitations are unaffected by water. WARNING: this test damages the stone, only use on chips.

5. Mineralogical disclosure question

- How to do it:
- Ask the seller: 'Is this selenite proper, or satin spar?'
- What to look for:
- Mineralogically literate sellers can answer immediately, they know whether they're selling the transparent or fibrous variety. Vague answers ('it's all selenite') indicate the seller may be using selenite as a catch-all term without mineralogical precision. This isn't dishonesty so much as industry convention.
