1. Cold-touch test
Easy- What you need:
- Just your hand or cheek
- How to do it:
- Pick up the room-temperature stone and hold it against the back of your hand or your cheek for 5-10 seconds. Note how long it takes to feel warm.
- What to look for:
- Real malachite stays distinctly cool for 5-8 seconds because mineral specimens have higher thermal conductivity than polymer. Plastic and resin imitations feel cool for less than 2 seconds before matching skin temperature.

- Use with another test, this rules out obvious plastic but doesn't catch high-quality resin composites with mineral fill.
2. Weight-in-hand test
Easy- What you need:
- A kitchen scale (grams) and a reference piece (any tumbled quartz)

- Weigh the suspect malachite. Compare its weight-to-size ratio against a similar-sized piece of quartz. Real malachite's specific gravity of 3.6-4.0 means it weighs roughly 1.4× as much as quartz at the same volume.

- How to do it:
- On an inconspicuous edge (or a chip if you have one), try to scratch the surface lightly with a copper penny, then a steel knife. Real malachite is Mohs 3.5-4, a knife will scratch it but a penny (Mohs 3) won't.
- What to look for:
- If a copper penny scratches the surface easily, the piece is too soft to be malachite (likely dyed howlite at Mohs 3.5, close but typically more chalky). If a knife doesn't leave any mark, it's harder than 5.5 and definitely not malachite (could be dyed jasper or chrysocolla).

5. Hot-needle test (destructive, use only on a small chip)

- A sewing needle, a candle or lighter, a small chip of the suspect stone
- How to do it:
- Heat the needle tip until it glows red. Touch it briefly to an inconspicuous spot. Smell the result. WARNING: do this outdoors and only on a chip, never on the main display piece.
- What to look for:
- Real malachite produces no smell (or a faint metallic odor from the copper content) and the needle leaves only a tiny mark. Polymer/resin produces an acrid plastic burning smell and the needle sinks slightly into a softening spot.

- Diagnostic for plastic vs mineral, but destructive, only use on chips, not display specimens.
6. Acetone swab test
Easy- What you need:
- Pure acetone (nail polish remover), a white cotton swab
- How to do it:
- Dampen the cotton swab with acetone. Rub firmly on an inconspicuous spot for 10 seconds. Examine the swab.
- What to look for:
- Real malachite leaves no color on the swab. Dyed howlite or dyed magnesite often shows green pigment transferring to the swab, a clear sign of surface dye.

- Not a fake, but azurite-malachite (blue+green mixed) is sometimes sold as pure malachite with the blue cropped out of marketing photos.

Use a recognized gemological laboratory. The major ones in the United States are GIA (Gemological Institute of America), AGS (American Gem Society), and AIGS in Bangkok for Asian-market stones. Each operates by mail-in submission.
Typical cost: $50-$200 for standard certification depending on stone, complexity, and turnaround. GIA lab reports are the global gold standard.
For moderate-value pieces ($30-$200)
