How to spot real jade

Real jade is either jadeite (rarer, harder, Mohs 6.5-7) or nephrite (more common, Mohs 6-6.5). Type A is natural and untreated; Type B is polymer-impregnated; Type C is dyed. Common substitutes include serpentine ('new jade'), dyed quartzite ('Malaysia jade'), and glass. The cold-touch test and chime test are the practical starting points.

Jade is one of the most culturally significant stones in human history, particularly in East Asian, Mesoamerican, and Maori traditions, and that significance has produced more substitutes and treatments than almost any other stone. Real jade comes in two mineralogical species: jadeite (rarer, harder, primarily from Burma) and nephrite (more common, slightly softer, from China, New Zealand, and elsewhere). Both are legitimate jade. In my practice, the first authentication question is whether the stone is jade at all (versus serpentine or quartzite), and the second is what treatment level applies, because Type A natural jade, Type B polymer-impregnated, and Type C dyed all command different prices and signal different things to a buyer.

Market reality

Why Jade Gets Faked

Imperial green jadeite is one of the most expensive gemstones in the world, fine-grade pieces can command tens of thousands of dollars per carat at auction. High-grade nephrite (especially Hetian 'mutton fat' jade from Xinjiang) similarly commands premium pricing. The economic incentive to substitute or treat is enormous. Serpentine ('new jade') and dyed quartzite cost the producer pennies to manufacture and visually approximate jade at arm's length.

The treatment side is equally significant. Type B treatment involves bleaching the jade with acid to remove brown impurities, then impregnating with polymer to restore stability, producing visually superior pieces that fail certain authenticity tests. Type C is straightforward dye enhancement to deepen color. Both treatments produce real jadeite or nephrite but should be disclosed. The Hong Kong and Yangon (Myanmar) jade markets developed the Type A/B/C terminology specifically to address disclosure expectations.

These are the visual signatures many people learn to recognize after handling a few authentic specimens. In my practice, the combination of these tells, not any single one alone, is what makes the difference between an educated guess and a confident read.

At-home tests

Hands-On Tests You Can Do

These tests can be done at home with simple tools. None of them is gemological certification, for definitive identification, consult a qualified gemologist. But for consumer-level confidence, the combination of two or three tests is usually sufficient.

1. Cold-touch test

Easy
What you need:
Your hand or cheek
How to do it:
Pick up the room-temperature stone and hold it against the back of your hand or cheek. Note how long it stays cool.
What to look for:
Real jade (both jadeite and nephrite) is highly thermally conductive and stays distinctly cold for 8-10 seconds. Glass and resin imitations feel cool for less than 3 seconds. Serpentine cools moderately. Plastic warms almost immediately.
Reliability:
Reliable on its own for catching plastic and resin. Use with another test for serpentine.

2. Chime test (for tomb jade or solid pieces)

What you need:
A piece of jade jewelry on a string or a flat jade piece
How to do it:
Suspend the jade piece or hold it loosely, then gently tap it with another piece of jade or a metal object.
What to look for:
Real jade produces a distinct ringing or chiming sound when struck, clear, sustained, almost musical. Substitutes produce dull thunks (serpentine) or sharp clicks (glass). This is a traditional Chinese authentication test.
Reliability:
Reliable on its own for solid pieces with thickness; less useful for thin cabochons.

3. Density-in-hand check

A kitchen scale and reference stone
How to do it:
Weigh the jade and compare its weight-to-size ratio against similar-sized quartzite or serpentine.
What to look for:
Real jadeite has density 3.30-3.38 g/cm³; nephrite 2.90-3.02 g/cm³. Both feel noticeably heavy for size. Serpentine is lighter at 2.5-2.6. Quartzite is similar to nephrite at 2.6. Glass varies but typically lower.
Reliability:
Use with another test, density overlap with quartzite limits standalone diagnostic.

4. UV light response (for Type B detection)

A 365nm longwave UV flashlight
How to do it:
In a dark room, shine UV onto the jade and observe.
What to look for:
Untreated jade shows weak fluorescence or none. Type B (polymer-impregnated) jade often fluoresces strong blue-white due to the polymer, this is one of the most reliable Type B detection methods. Type C (dyed) may show different fluorescence depending on dye type.
Reliability:
Reliable on its own for detecting Type B treatment.

5. Hardness scratch test

Moderate
What you need:
Steel knife (Mohs 5.5) and tungsten point (Mohs 7+) if available
How to do it:
On an inconspicuous edge, test with steel knife.
What to look for:
Real jadeite (Mohs 6.5-7) and nephrite (Mohs 6-6.5) resist a steel knife. Serpentine (Mohs 4-6) can be scratched by a steel knife. Glass (Mohs 5.5) will scratch in some cases but is also harder than soft serpentine.
Reliability:
Use with another test, destructive, reserve for skeptical pieces.

6. Provenance and treatment disclosure

How to do it:
Ask: 'Is this jadeite or nephrite? Is it Type A, Type B, or Type C? What country is it from?'
What to look for:
Reputable jade sellers can answer all three questions immediately. Vague answers ('it's all jade') or refusal to discuss treatment level are red flags. Type A natural untreated jade should be priced significantly above Type B or C.
Reliability:
Reliable on its own as a seller-trust signal.

Most Common Fakes and Substitutes

According to traditional crystal healing literature and gemological practice, these are the substitutes most often encountered when jade is misrepresented. Some of these are legitimate stones in their own right, the issue is mislabeling, not the stone itself.

Serpentine ('new jade' or 'olive jade')

Red flag
Softer than jade, more uniform translucent green, lighter weight, marketed as 'jade' without species specification.
How to spot
Hardness test (serpentine scratches with steel knife, jade doesn't). Density test (serpentine is lighter). Serpentine is a real stone, the issue is mislabeling.

Dyed quartzite ('Malaysia jade' or 'Mountain jade')

Red flag
Color appears surface-only, white showing in fractures, marketing names that aren't actual jade species.
How to spot
Acetone swab may pull dye. Examine fractures for white underneath. 'Malaysia jade' is industry shorthand for dyed quartzite.

Type B treated jadeite (bleached + polymer)

Red flag
Suspiciously perfect color and translucency, very high price relative to disclosed Type A.
How to spot
UV light reveals blue-white fluorescence from polymer. Type B is real jade but should be disclosed and priced accordingly.

Type C dyed jadeite (real jade + dye)

Red flag
Color is too uniform or too vivid, may concentrate in fractures.
How to spot
Acetone swab may show dye transfer. Examine fractures and crystal boundaries for dye pooling. Type C should be disclosed.

Glass jade imitations

Red flag
Glassy clarity, visible bubbles under loupe, warmer to touch than real jade.

Bubble inspection under 10x. Cold-touch test, glass warms faster than real jade.

Plastic/resin jade imitations

Red flag
Very lightweight, warm to touch, perfect uniform color, no internal structure.

Authentic price range

Type A natural jadeite: $50-$500+ per pendant for good color; Imperial green grades $1,000-$50,000+. Type A nephrite: $30-$200 per piece for good quality. Type B treated jadeite: $20-$100 per piece. Type C dyed: $10-$50.

Substitute price range

Serpentine 'new jade': $5-$30 per piece. Dyed quartzite 'Malaysia jade': $3-$15. Glass and resin: $1-$10.

In the US, look for dealers who can provide GIA or HKJSL (Hong Kong Jade Society Lab) certificates for higher-grade pieces. Many people find that paying for one Type A natural jade pendant from a verified dealer is more meaningful, and more financially sound, than collecting multiple uncertified pieces of unclear provenance.

This guide recommends professional gemological verification for higher-value pieces. Below is the practical path most consumers use, including realistic price ranges.

For higher-value pieces ($200+)

Use a recognized gemological laboratory. The major ones in the United States are GIA (Gemological Institute of America), AGS (American Gem Society), and AIGS in Bangkok for Asian-market stones. Each operates by mail-in submission.

Typical cost: $50-$200 for standard certification depending on stone, complexity, and turnaround. GIA lab reports are the global gold standard.

For moderate-value pieces ($30-$200)

Visit a local gem & mineral show or established lapidary. Many reputable dealers will run a refractive-index check or specific-gravity test on-site as a courtesy, particularly if you are considering buying from them. Established rock shops with multi-decade reputations are also reliable.

Typical cost: free to $20 for an informal in-person identification. Mineral show season (spring and fall in most US regions) is the best time.

A note on jewelry-store appraisals: these are not the same as gemological certification. Most retail jewelry appraisals are valuation for insurance, not identification. If a piece's identity is in question, ask specifically for an identification report from a graduate gemologist (G.G.) credentialed by GIA or equivalent, not a retail appraisal.

They are two different minerals that are both called 'jade.'
