These are the visual signatures many people learn to recognize after handling a few authentic specimens. In my practice, the combination of these tells, not any single one alone, is what makes the difference between an educated guess and a confident read.
- Real amber feels warm to the touch, not cool like glass or stone, but room-temperature or slightly warm.
- Authentic amber is relatively lightweight, specific gravity 1.05-1.10, lighter than most stones.
- Real amber shows internal flow lines, sometimes with trapped air bubbles or organic inclusions.
- Genuine specimens may contain preserved inclusions: insects, plant matter, or small organic fragments.
- Copal often looks very similar to amber but is typically softer and more easily damaged.

Hands-On Tests You Can Do
These tests can be done at home with simple tools. None of them is gemological certification, for definitive identification, consult a qualified gemologist. But for consumer-level confidence, the combination of two or three tests is usually sufficient.
1. Salt-water float test (the classic test)
Easy- What you need:
- A glass of water and 2-3 tablespoons of salt, the suspect amber
- How to do it:
- Make a saturated salt solution (about 1 part salt to 4 parts water). Submerge the piece. Observe whether it sinks or floats.
- What to look for:
- Real amber floats in saturated saltwater (specific gravity 1.05-1.10, slightly less than dense saltwater at ~1.10-1.20). Copal also floats, this test won't distinguish amber from copal but will catch plastic. Most plastics sink in saltwater. Glass definitely sinks.

2. Hot-needle smell test (for copal vs amber)
Moderate- What you need:
- A sewing needle, a candle or lighter, a small chip of suspect amber
- How to do it:
- Heat the needle until red-hot. Touch briefly to an inconspicuous chip. Smell the result. WARNING: do this in well-ventilated area, only on small chips.
- What to look for:
- Real amber produces a clean, pleasant pine or resinous smell when heated (fossilized resin from ancient pine trees). Copal produces a similar but sweeter, more 'fresh' resin smell, and copal melts at much lower temperature than amber (copal melts around 150°C, amber needs over 250°C). Plastic produces an acrid, chemical, burning-plastic smell. WARNING: never use on display pieces, destructive.

3. UV light response
Easy- What you need:
- A 365nm longwave UV flashlight
- How to do it:
- In a dark room, shine UV onto the amber and observe fluorescence.

- Real amber shows distinctive blue-green or yellow-green fluorescence under longwave UV, sometimes quite strong. Copal shows weaker fluorescence, often white or pale yellow. Plastic imitations typically show no fluorescence or wrong-color response (often dull). This is one of the most reliable practical tests for amber.

4. Acetone test (for copal detection)
Easy- What you need:
- Pure acetone (nail polish remover) and a white cotton swab
- How to do it:
- Dampen the swab with acetone and rub on an inconspicuous spot for 10-15 seconds. Examine the swab.
- What to look for:
- Real amber is unaffected by acetone, the swab stays clean and the amber surface unchanged. Copal will soften, get sticky, or transfer onto the swab as the acetone dissolves the younger resin. Plastic may also be affected by acetone depending on type. This is one of the most reliable amber-versus-copal tests.

5. Static electricity test
Easy- What you need:
- A piece of wool fabric and small paper shreds
- How to do it:
- Rub the amber briskly with the wool for 20-30 seconds. Test whether it attracts small paper shreds.
- What to look for:
- Real amber, when rubbed, develops a static charge that attracts small paper shreds, hair, or dust, this is a 6,000-year-old observation (the Greek word for amber, 'elektron,' is the root of 'electricity'). Plastic also generates static but typically less reliably. Glass and stone do not.
- Reliability:
- Use with another test, supplementary diagnostic.
6. Hardness scratch test (use sparingly)
Moderate- What you need:
- A fingernail
- How to do it:
- On an inconspicuous edge, attempt to scratch with a fingernail.
- What to look for:
- Real amber (Mohs 2-2.5) is barely scratched by a fingernail or shows very light marks. Copal is similar hardness. Plastic varies but often softer (easily scratched). Bakelite is harder than amber. This is a soft-stone test, useful for confirming amber softness range.

Use a recognized gemological laboratory. The major ones in the United States are GIA (Gemological Institute of America), AGS (American Gem Society), and AIGS in Bangkok for Asian-market stones. Each operates by mail-in submission.
Typical cost: $50-$200 for standard certification depending on stone, complexity, and turnaround. GIA lab reports are the global gold standard.
For moderate-value pieces ($30-$200)
Visit a local gem & mineral show or established lapidary. Many reputable dealers will run a refractive-index check or specific-gravity test on-site as a courtesy, particularly if you are considering buying from them. Established rock shops with multi-decade reputations are also reliable.
