Inner Peace and Mindfulness Guide

If the practice makes things worse, stop. The practice is one limb of a two-limb plan when the state is clinical. If suicidal thoughts are present, contact 988 (US) or your local crisis line today.

Quick Answer

The View from Above is the Stoic cosmic-perspective practice, imagining the slow rise above body, home, city, earth. Drawn from Marcus Aurelius's Meditations 7.48 and 9.30 and Pierre Hadot's The Inner Citadel (1998), the practice returns proportion to what consumed you. Sit with the scale.

What this practice does

Marcus Aurelius returned to this practice repeatedly in the Meditations, "all earthly things, and how cheap, how worthless, how brief, how passing." Pierre Hadot's scholarship on the Stoic spiritual exercises is the modern academic foundation. Use this when the Wildfire has burnt itself out and you need to see the scale of what was actually at stake.

Always look at human things as ephemeral and trivial; what was yesterday a little drop of mucus, tomorrow is ashes or a mummy.

The practice

How to practice

The instructions below run 5 to 15 minutes. Read through all the steps before you begin. The practice is not the goal; you are.

  1. Sit comfortably and close your eyes.

  2. Imagine rising slowly above your body, then above your home, your city, your country, the earth.

  3. Hold the view from far away. Notice how the situation that consumed you a moment ago looks from this distance.

  4. Stay with the view for several minutes.

  5. Return slowly to your body. Carry the perspective back with you.

A stone to hold

Crystal companion

In Crystal Cassandra's work, certain stones are the somatic companion to certain practices. The pairing is not magical; it is a steady weight in the palm that becomes part of the noticing.

Rose Quartz

Rose Quartz is the stone most associated with mettā-style practice in the modern Western crystal canon. Many practitioners simply hold it through the difficult-person phase, which gives the hand somewhere to be and keeps the practice a felt thing rather than an argument you are conducting with yourself about someone.

Keep sitting

These practices complement The View from Above (Bird's-Eye Reflection), same category, or matched to overlapping inner weathers.
