What is the 8-Week MBSR Companion?
The 8-Week MBSR Companion is Aria Stillwater's adaptation of Jon Kabat-Zinn's clinical Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction curriculum, written for readers who have tried apps and bounced. Eight weeks of structured practice, comparative-traditions reading homework with page references, daily inquiry, named therapist co-practitioner thresholds. The full curriculum is in development; Week 1 is finished and free to read now.
In the Western secular mindfulness tradition, this companion is built on three reference frameworks. According to Jon Kabat-Zinn in Full Catastrophe Living (1990), the foundational modern reference for MBSR, the eight-week curriculum is empirically grounded in clinical research at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. In the Theravāda Buddhist tradition that anchors every practice in MBSR, Buddhaghosa in theVisuddhimagga (5th c. CE) describes the same concentration-and-insight scaffold that Kabat-Zinn later secularized. According to Sharon Salzberg in Lovingkindness (1995), the mettā week (Week 5) belongs in the curriculum because the practice changes the brain in the same way concentration does. Pema Chödrön in When Things Fall Apart (1997) describes the difficult-week curriculum we read together in Week 6.
You have tried the apps. The apps did not work.
Most readers who arrive at this page have a meditation history. You tried Headspace, you tried Calm, you tried a ten-day silent retreat in 2019 that you have not been able to repeat. You have a copy of Wherever You Go, There You Are on a shelf and maybe Full Catastrophe Living next to it, both opened and abandoned somewhere around chapter four. You know who Pema Chödrön is. You know what the second arrow is. The practice has called you back for years and the call has gotten quieter as life got louder.
This is the curriculum for the reader who already knows the practice exists and has not found the container that holds it. Apps end. Books sit. A retreat is a week. The 8-Week MBSR Companion is what Jon Kabat-Zinn built in 1979 for the patients at the UMass Stress Reduction Clinic, eight weeks of structured daily practice, weekly themes, inquiry, readings, off-cushion integration, adapted for the comparative-traditions reader who wants the sources cited, the contraindications named, and the therapist threshold disclosed.
The original MBSR enrolment runs $400-600 in person. That price gates the curriculum from the people who would most benefit from it. This is the same eight weeks, hand-written by Aria, with the comparative-traditions register and the editorial honesty about what the practice can and cannot do. It is not finished yet, and until it is, quoting you a price for it would be the opposite of that honesty.
What you walk away with
- The full 8-week curriculum in PDF form, each week names a signature practice, a 45-minute daily formal sit, 3-4 informal practices, 4-5 inquiry prompts, 2-3 specific readings with page references, contraindications, a therapist co-practitioner threshold, a signature breath, and a crystal companion.
- Eight weekly emails in Aria's voice, one on day one of the week (the practice introduction) and one on day five (the inquiry check-in). The cadence holds the curriculum even when life does not.
- Cross-references to the free Mindfulness Practice Library (25 named practices, every one with classical citation) so the curriculum has a 25-practice deep-bench for state-matched variations.
- A Treleaven-integrated contraindication list every week, when not to do the practice, when to switch anchors, when a therapist becomes essential. The practice does not pretend to be safe for everyone in every state.
- Eight crystal companions, one per week, Amethyst, Selenite, Carnelian, Clear Quartz, Lepidolite, Rose Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Clear Quartz, chosen for the somatic register of each week's practice.
Eight weeks, named and structured
The structure follows Kabat-Zinn's 1979 curriculum (foundation → body → movement → thoughts → emotions → loving-kindness → difficulty → integration). The register is Aria's, comparative across the canon, named sources on every page, the therapist threshold disclosed. Week 1 is fully readable today as a free preview.

Most modern mindfulness products treat the canon as a single fluid pool. The Buddha said something; Marcus Aurelius said something; the modern teachers say something; the practice works. That register flattens the traditions and erases the sources. The texts agree on different things, and the differences matter.
In this curriculum, the body-scan practice in Week 2 cites the Mahasi-Sayadaw lineage (1971) that Kabat-Zinn adapted for the original MBSR. The R.A.I.N. practice in Week 5 cites Michele McDonald's 1980s framing and Tara Brach's 2003 expansion. The mettā curriculum in Week 6 cites Visuddhimagga IX.40-82 (Buddhaghosa, 5th c. CE) and Sharon Salzberg's 1995 four-phrase modern adaptation. The groundlessness work in Week 7 cites Pema Chödrön (1997) alongside Epictetus's Enchiridion chapter 1, two ladders, one roof.
That precision is the difference. The apps tell you to relax. The classical road tells you the practice is hard work, names when not to do it, and discloses where a therapist becomes the co-practitioner. Aria is explicit: she is a Western practitioner who has studied comparatively, and every page she writes cites her sources by name.
Eight weeks of structured practice, still being written.
Week 1 is finished and free. The remaining seven weeks are in development. There is no price and no release date yet, and Aria would rather say so plainly than quote you a number she cannot stand behind.

What MBSR normally costs
| Product | Price | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Calm | $70/yr | Lifestyle app |
| Sounds True 8-Week MBSR | $147 | Online curriculum |
| In-person MBSR | $400-600 | Clinical program |
| Aria's 8-Week MBSR Companion | Not priced yet | Source-cited curriculum |
The original UMass MBSR enrolment runs $400-600 in person. The Sounds True online curriculum is the closest comparable product. Calm is a lifestyle app, not a curriculum. Aria's is the same eight weeks, written for the comparative-traditions reader. It is not finished, so it is not priced. Those numbers are here for context on what the practice usually costs, not as a comparison to an offer that does not exist yet.

Is this just a PDF, or is there an actual curriculum?
The PDF is the spine; the curriculum is the spine plus the companion library and the weekly email cadence. Each week of the PDF names a signature practice, a daily formal sit, four to five inquiry prompts, two to three specific readings (with page numbers), a Treleaven-informed contraindication list, the therapist co-practitioner threshold, the week's signature breath, and a crystal companion. Each week's email arrives on day one of the week with Aria's voice introducing the practice, and on day five with a check-in inquiry. The companion library is the 25 mindfulness practices from /mindfulness-practices, cross-referenced from every week. It is a structured eight-week container, not a download.
How is this different from Headspace or Calm?
Headspace and Calm teach mindfulness as a relaxation product. This is the clinical Kabat-Zinn curriculum, adapted for the comparative-traditions reader. The practices come from named classical sources, the Satipatthana Sutta (Majjhima Nikāya 10), the Ānāpānasati Sutta (MN 118), the Visuddhimagga (Buddhaghosa, 5th c. CE), the Sallatha Sutta (Saṃyutta Nikāya 36.6), Marcus Aurelius's Meditations, Epictetus's Enchiridion, Sharon Salzberg's modern Western Lovingkindness curriculum, Pema Chödrön's groundlessness work. Every page cites where the practice came from. Every page names when not to do the practice and when a therapist becomes a co-practitioner. The apps stop at relaxation. The classical road keeps going.
Do I need to already know how to meditate?
No. Week 1 begins with ānāpānasati, mindfulness of breathing, which is the practice Bhante Henepola Gunaratana describes in chapter 6 of Mindfulness in Plain English. If you can sit upright and notice the breath, you can begin. The curriculum is built to be inhabited, not performed. The texts agree: restless and bored in the sit? That is the sit. Anything sold as easier than that is selling something else.
What if I miss a week?
The curriculum is built for working adults, not retreatants. If you miss a week, the structure waits. The email cadence will keep arriving on schedule, but the PDF stays with you indefinitely, re-enter when you can. The texts agree that the practice is non-linear; many practitioners benefit from repeating Week 5 (emotions) or Week 7 (working with difficulty) before moving on. The eight weeks are a scaffold, not a deadline. Sit when you can sit.
Is this a substitute for therapy?
No, and Aria is explicit about that on every week's page. MBSR is a clinical mindfulness curriculum with a solid research base for stress, chronic pain, and relapse-prevention in depression (Segal, Williams & Teasdale's MBCT). It is not a treatment for clinical anxiety, depression, PTSD, or complicated grief on its own. The broader contemplative-neuroscience literature is suggestive, not settled, see Van Dam et al., "Mind the Hype," Perspectives on Psychological Science (2018), for the honest counter-read on small-N and replication issues. Every week names a therapist co-practitioner threshold, when the practice supplements clinical care and when a clinician becomes essential. The trauma-sensitive modifications from David Treleaven's Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness (2018) are integrated throughout. If you are in active clinical care, this curriculum is the floor on which that care stands. If you are not, the curriculum names when to seek it.
Can I do this if I am currently grieving?
Yes, with a modification: pair this curriculum with the Grief Practice Library (/grief-practice), which is built specifically for the seasons of grief. The 8-Week MBSR Companion's Week 5 (emotions) and Week 6 (loving-kindness, including karuṇā for grief) are particularly relevant, but the Grief Library's twelve practices, Buddhist karuṇā, R.A.I.N., Pema Chödrön's groundlessness, Frankl's meaning search, are the closer fit for acute grief. The two work together. The Grief Library is free and finished; the MBSR Companion is still in development, though its Week 1 is free to read now.
P.S. From Aria
The practice is hard work. I am not going to pretend otherwise. Anything sold as easier than that is selling something else. What this curriculum gives you is the floor: the structure for eight weeks of daily sitting, the readings that the early modern Western teachers learned the practice from, the inquiry that makes the sit visible to yourself, the cadence of weekly emails that hold the structure even when life does not. Above the floor is depth: the books I cite each week are the real curriculum, and the eight weeks are the architecture that lets the books finally land.
If you have arrived here because you have tried the apps and the apps did not work, that is not your failure. The apps were never the curriculum. The curriculum is structured time, named sources, and a teacher willing to say where the practice stops being safe alone. Sit with Week 1. It is free below.
