How do you cleanse crystals under the full moon?

In traditional crystal healing, set your crystals on a windowsill or safe outdoor spot before sunset on the night of the full moon, then retrieve them at sunrise before direct sun reaches sun-sensitive stones like Amethyst and Rose Quartz. Moonlight is safe for every crystal, so you can cleanse your whole collection at once. Many people find their stones feel lighter afterward.

The full moon is the most powerful time to cleanse and recharge your entire crystal collection. For thousands of years, cultures around the world have recognized the full moon as a time of culmination, illumination, and release. When you place your crystals under the full moon, you're tapping into this same ancient rhythm, a gentle but thorough energetic reset that works for every crystal without exception.

Lunar energy

Why the Full Moon?

The full moon represents peak lunar energy, the moon at its brightest and most influential. In crystal healing traditions, this energy is understood to be both cleansing (releasing what the crystal has absorbed) and charging (infusing the stone with fresh, vibrant energy). It's the energetic equivalent of a complete restart.

Cleansing power

Full moon energy gently dissolves accumulated energetic residue from your crystals.

Universal safety

Moonlight is safe for every crystal, no exceptions. No need to sort or separate your collection.

Batch processing

You can cleanse your entire collection at once, making it the most efficient monthly practice.

Emotional alignment

The full moon amplifies emotional awareness, making it an ideal time to reset your crystal intentions.

Step by step

The Full Moon Ritual

  1. 1

    Gather your crystals

Collect all the crystals you'd like to cleanse. You can include your entire collection, there's no limit. Give each one a gentle wipe with a soft cloth to remove any physical dust.

  2. 2

    Prepare your space

Choose a windowsill, balcony, or outdoor area that receives moonlight. Lay down a cloth or plate for your crystals to rest on. If placing them outdoors, ensure they're safe from weather and animals.

  3. 3

    Set your intentions

As you place each crystal, hold it for a moment and mentally release whatever energy it's been holding. You might say quietly: 'I release what no longer serves, and welcome fresh energy.' This doesn't need to be elaborate, sincerity matters more than ceremony.

  4. 4

    Place before sunset

Set your crystals out before sunset so they can absorb the transitional energy of dusk, the full night of moonlight, and the renewal of dawn. The complete cycle, sunset to sunrise, provides the deepest cleanse.

  5. 5

    Retrieve at sunrise

Collect your crystals in the morning before direct sunlight hits them. This is especially important for sun-sensitive stones like Amethyst, Rose Quartz, and Citrine. Notice how the stones feel different, many people describe them as lighter or more vibrant.

  6. 6

    Reprogram with intention

After retrieving your freshly cleansed crystals, hold each one and set a new intention. The crystal is now a blank slate, ready to receive your focused energy.

When to do it

Timing Your Full Moon Cleansing

The full moon's energy is strongest during a three-day window: the night before, the night of, and the night after the actual full moon. Any of these three nights works beautifully. You don't need to see the moon, even on cloudy nights, the lunar energy permeates the atmosphere.

Selenite Charging Plate

Between full moons, keep your crystals charged on a selenite plate. The perfect companion to your monthly lunar ritual.
