Quick Answer

Cleansing crystals removes accumulated energy and resets the stone for new intention work. Traditional methods include moonlight (universally safe), selenite plates, sage or palo santo smoke, sound (singing bowls), and brief running water, but never water for selenite, halite, calcite, or other water-sensitive stones.

Key Takeaways

  • In the metaphysical tradition, as described by Melody and Judy Hall, crystals absorb, store, and transmit energy.
  • Place your crystals on a windowsill, balcony, or directly on the earth under the Full Moon.
  • Sound cleansing uses vibrational frequency to reset a crystal’s energy.
  • Pass your crystals through the smoke of sustainably sourced sage, palo santo, cedar, or sweetgrass.
  • Bury your crystals in a bowl of sea salt or Himalayan salt for 12 to 24 hours.

Why Cleanse Your Crystals?

In the metaphysical tradition, as described by Melody and Judy Hall, crystals absorb, store, and transmit energy. When you work with a crystal, carrying it, meditating with it, placing it in your home, it interacts with the energetic environment around it. Over time, many practitioners find the stone accumulates a kind of residue from your emotional states, the people around you, and the spaces it inhabits.

Cleansing resets the stone to its baseline, like clearing the history on a browser. The crystal is not broken or depleted; it simply benefits from a fresh start. In my practice, I cleanse my working stones after particularly intense emotional sessions, after another person has handled them, or on a regular rhythm aligned with the lunar cycle. The Moon Phase Today tool will tell you when the Full Moon arrives if you want to time it that way.

You do not need to believe in a specific mechanism for this to be useful. Hold this stone and notice what happens when you pause with the intention of clearing it. Even on a purely psychological level, the act of deliberately cleansing a crystal reinforces your intention, deepens your ritual relationship with it, and creates a moment of mindful pause in your day.

Moonlight Cleansing

Place your crystals on a windowsill, balcony, or directly on the earth under the Full Moon. Leave them overnight and retrieve them in the morning. In my practice, moonlight is the most universally safe method, it works with every crystal and carries no risk of fading, dissolving, or damaging your stones. The way the moonlight meets the stones is itself worth witnessing.

Full Moon light, in the tradition Selene Tides writes about in our moon phases guide, is considered the most potent moment, but any moon phase works. Some practitioners reserve New Moon charging for setting fresh intentions into recently cleansed stones.

Sound Cleansing

Sound cleansing uses vibrational frequency to reset a crystal’s energy. Pass a singing bowl, tuning fork, or bell over and around your crystals, allowing the sound waves to wash through them. Even clapping loudly around the stones can work in a pinch.

This method is excellent for cleansing multiple crystals at once and is completely safe for all stone types. Many practitioners find it the most efficient method for large collections.

Smoke Cleansing

Pass your crystals through the smoke of sustainably sourced sage, palo santo, cedar, or sweetgrass. The smoke carries away stagnant energy. Hold each stone in the smoke for 30 to 60 seconds, rotating it to expose all sides.

Be mindful of sourcing: white sage and palo santo are sacred to specific Indigenous traditions and are sometimes overharvested. Locally grown garden sage, rosemary, or cedar are respectful alternatives that work equally well.

Salt Cleansing

Bury your crystals in a bowl of sea salt or Himalayan salt for 12 to 24 hours. The salt absorbs released energy. Discard the salt afterward, do not reuse it for cleansing or cooking.

Important: salt can scratch soft stones and damage porous or metallic crystals. Use this method only for hard, non-porous stones like Clear Quartz, Amethyst, or Tiger’s Eye. Never use salt with Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, Hematite, Opal, or Turquoise.

Earth, Water, and Selenite Methods

Earth burial: bury the crystal in soil (in a cloth bag to keep it clean) for 24 hours to 3 days. This is the deepest reset, the earth absorbs and transmutes whatever the stone has been holding. Excellent for stones that feel very heavy or energetically congested.

Water cleansing: hold the crystal under running natural water (a stream, spring, or even the tap) for 1 to 2 minutes. CRITICAL WARNING: never submerge Selenite, Halite, Calcite, Lapis Lazuli, Malachite, Pyrite, Hematite, or Angelite in water. These stones dissolve, rust, or release toxic compounds in water.

Selenite plate: place any crystal on a selenite charging plate or bowl for 6+ hours. Selenite is self-cleansing and transfers its clearing energy to other stones passively. This is the lowest-effort method and my personal favorite for daily maintenance.

Crystal Recommendation

Selenite

A selenite plate can cleanse and charge your entire collection, it is the single most useful crystal care tool you can own.

Visualization Cleansing

Hold the crystal in both hands, close your eyes, and visualize bright white or golden light flowing through the stone. Imagine the light flushing out any stagnant, dark, or heavy energy, see it dissolving and being replaced by clear, radiant light.

This method requires no tools and can be done anywhere. It is particularly useful when traveling or when you need to quickly reset a stone between uses. The effectiveness depends entirely on the clarity and focus of your intention.

Crystals That Cannot Go in Water or Sun

NEVER place in water: Selenite (dissolves), Halite (dissolves), Calcite (dissolves slowly), Lapis Lazuli (porous, dye may leach), Malachite (releases copper compounds), Pyrite (rusts), Hematite (rusts), Angelite (turns to gypite). As a rule, any stone below 6 on the Mohs hardness scale should be kept away from extended water contact.

NEVER place in prolonged direct sunlight: Amethyst (fades to pale), Rose Quartz (fades), Citrine if natural (fades), Fluorite (fades), Kunzite (fades dramatically), Aquamarine (fades), Smoky Quartz (lightens), Aventurine (fades). Brief morning sunlight (under 30 minutes) is generally safe; midday sun for hours is not.

When in doubt, use moonlight, sound, or selenite. These three methods are universally safe for every crystal in existence.

Charging Your Crystals

Charging is different from cleansing: cleansing removes accumulated energy, while charging fills the crystal with fresh, amplified energy. The most popular charging methods include Full Moon light, sunlight (for sun-safe stones only), placing on a selenite plate, burying in the earth, and holding while setting a clear intention.

Many practitioners combine cleansing and charging in a single ritual, cleanse under the Full Moon, then hold the crystal at sunrise and state your intention. This creates a complete energetic reset: releasing the old and welcoming the new.
