What does 4 mean in a phone number?

The number 4 is the most avoided digit in Chinese culture. It is read as inauspicious because 4 (四 sì) sounds like 死 (sǐ, 'death'). This fear, sometimes called tetraphobia, removes 4 from floor numbers, room numbers, and phone numbers. But a single 4 is not a verdict on the whole number in the Ba Zhai method.

The homophone

The cultural meaning of 4

Four is shunned across the Chinese-speaking world. The near-homophone with 死 (sǐ, 'death') is strong enough that many buildings skip the 4th, 14th, and 24th floors, and phone numbers with 4 are sold at a discount. The most feared combination is 14 (要死, 'will die').

The field reading

How 4 reads in the Ba Zhai method

The deeper method is more forgiving than the sound. In the Ba Zhai (八宅) pairing table, pairs containing 4 land on different fields, and some are strong: 14 and 41 are 生气 (the best field), 34 and 43 are 延年 (Longevity), while 24 and 42 are 五鬼 and 48 and 84 are 绝命. So a 4 is not automatically bad; the pair it forms and where it sits decide. Read the whole number before rejecting it for a single 4.

In practice

Using 4 in your own number

Culturally, many will avoid any 4, and in a number you plan to share widely that social weight is a fair reason. But on the Ba Zhai layer, do not discard a number for a lone 4; a free reading of the full number shows whether that 4 is helping or hurting.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why is 4 unlucky in Chinese culture?

Four (四 sì) sounds almost identical to 死 (sǐ), 'death', so it is widely avoided, a fear known as tetraphobia. Many buildings skip the 4th and 14th floors and phone numbers with 4 are discounted.

Is a phone number with a 4 ruined?

Not necessarily. Culturally a 4 lowers a number's status, but in the Ba Zhai method what matters is the pairs and the ending. Some 4-pairs, like 14 and 34, actually land on strong fields. Read the whole number before rejecting it.
