What does 8 mean in a phone number?
The number 8 is the luckiest digit in Chinese culture. It is read as auspicious because 8 (八 bā) is near-homophonous with 發 (fā), the first word of 發財 (fā cái, 'make a fortune'), so it carries the meaning of wealth and success. In a phone number, an 8 in the final position is prized most.

The homophone link between 8 (八 bā) and 發 (fā, 'prosper') ties the number directly to money and rising status, which is why businesses queue for license plates, addresses, and phone numbers heavy in eights.
