What is the crystal of the month for August?

Peridot is the working crystal for August in the CrystalStones.com tradition. The harvest's first stirring, in solar gold. The combination of Peridot's classical properties and August's seasonal energy (Leo Season into Virgo Season) makes it the right stone to anchor this month's practice.

Why this stone

Why Peridot for August

August in the northern hemisphere is late summer, Sun moving through Leo into Virgo on or around August 22-23. The first harvest cross-quarter (Lammas, August 1) marks the energetic turn from peak-summer to first-harvest. Days are still long but visibly shortening. August is traditionally a recognition month: what's been growing is now identifiable.

Peridot is August's modern AGS birthstone and is treated as a late-summer abundance stone in Judy Hall's The Crystal Bible Vol 1. The classical interpretation reads Peridot as a particularly active, almost solar stone, a quality the tradition ties to its volcanic origin story. Robert Simmons connects Peridot with harvest, framing it as a stone that asks you to count what is already there. August's invitation in the seasonal calendar is exactly that: the first harvest is in. The stone's olive-yellow-green colour sits between summer's gold and autumn's amber, a perfect chromatic echo of the month itself. In my practice with clients during August, Peridot consistently anchors gratitude work better than rose quartz (which is more relational than abundance-oriented) or citrine (which is more future-pointed).

The monthly ritual

August Peridot Working: Notice the First Harvest

The ritual below is the one Cassandra uses in her own practice and recommends for working with this stone through the calendar month. It can be done once as a setup or repeated weekly.

  1. 1

Hold Peridot to morning light until the green has gone gold at the edge

Peridot's bright olive-yellow-green colour is the colour of new growth at full ripeness. Notice the way the stone catches morning light differently than evening light; this is part of the working.

  2. 2

Name three things that have grown since April

Not goals, things that are actually visible now that weren't four months ago. A project, a relationship, a habit, an insight. August's invitation is to notice what's already harvested.

  3. 3

Pair Peridot with one wealth-sector working

Peridot is traditionally a manifestation stone associated with abundance (Judy Hall). On the Lammas cross-quarter (Aug 1), place Peridot alongside a Citrine or Pyrite in the southeast corner of your home or workspace.

  4. 4

    Refresh weekly through August

Each Sunday in August, hold the stone until you have renewed the three-things observation. The month is short and the energy is dense; weekly refresh keeps the focus.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Peridot and olivine?

Peridot is the gem-quality variety of the olivine mineral group. Same chemistry, just visually clearer and used for jewelry / working. Lesser-quality olivine is more common; Peridot is what's typically used in classical crystal practice.

Is Peridot safe in jewelry?

Conditionally. Peridot (Mohs 6.5-7) is slightly soft for daily rings; pendants and earrings are safer. Avoid prolonged sun exposure (it can dull the polish over years) and avoid water-soaking.

Why not just use Citrine for abundance?

Citrine works for forward-pointed manifestation (calling in new abundance). Peridot is for harvest recognition (acknowledging what's already arrived). They pair beautifully; many practitioners run Citrine April-July, then Peridot in August.

Will Peridot fade?

Slowly, in prolonged direct sun over months. For a working stone, store away from sunny windowsills and only charge briefly. Moonlight and Selenite work fine for Peridot cleansing.
