Divination and Dreams Guide

What is a year-ahead tarot reading?

A year-ahead tarot reading is a twelve-card journey through the year, one archetype drawn for each month, plus a thirteenth Year Card holding the through-line. Luna Ravenwood reads them in the Rider-Waite-Smith archetypal tradition, as mirrors for each month's work, never as fixed events. One personal PDF, $99.

Every January you can feel that a year has a shape; by December you can finally name it. This reading exists to name the shape while it can still be worked with. In the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot tradition, it is built on three reference frameworks. In the modern archetypal school, the tarot is best read as a unified archetypal narrative rather than a meaning list, with the Major Arcana as a single hero’s journey. In the birth-card tradition, the practice belongs to the querent, and that tradition supplies the lifelong Personality, Soul, and Year card method this reading uses. Arthur Edward Waite in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910), the founding text of the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, describes the original symbolism Pamela Colman Smith painted into every card.

Thirteen cards, fifty-two pages

Inside the 52 pages

The free daily-card tools give you a single card meaning in under ten seconds. The Year-Ahead does what the classical readers did: it reads the entire year as one arc. Every month gets its own page with the card, the archetype, the symbolic language, and a journaling prompt you can sit with on the first morning of that month. The PDF is built to be re-read, not consumed once.

Your lifelong Personality, Soul, and Year Cards

The classic tarot birth-card method reduces your birth-date arithmetic to three Major Arcana cards, the Personality (how the world meets you), the Soul (your inner work), and the rotating Year Card. These three cards sit beneath every page of the reading and are referenced in every monthly section. The lifetime three is the architecture; the twelve monthly cards are the weather.

Twelve monthly draws, one card per month

One card is drawn for each of the twelve months ahead via a deterministic SHA-256 hash of your birth date and the reading year. Same buyer with the same birth date receives the same twelve cards every time, Luna's reading does not change between Tuesday and Wednesday. Each monthly page includes the card (upright or reversed), Luna's archetypal reading, and a journaling prompt for that month.

The full-year arc, your story emerging

The 12 monthly cards are read together as a single year-long sentence. The archetypal tradition reads year-arcs as initiations, not lists, the deck weighted toward Major Arcana names a year of soul-level unfolding, the deck weighted toward Minor Arcana names a year of embodied practice. The arc section names your seasonal pivot, the month the year's energy turns.

The Three-Card Spread, for the year's real questions

When a real decision rises mid-year, a relationship, a move, a piece of work, use the classic 3-card spread to interrogate it. The first card names what's beneath, the second names what's moving, the third names the invitation. Taught in detail with how to shuffle, how to lay out, and how to journal the spread. The reading becomes something you return to all year.

Citation-rich, every page

Every claim cites a real source, from Arthur Edward Waite's The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910), the founding text of the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, to the modern archetypal and Jungian tarot scholarship named in full on our methodology and author pages. The PDF is footnoted to the source informing every interpretation.

Zero fear language, feared cards reframed

The Tower is the truth-revealing card, what falls was already falling. Death is transformation, never literal, what your year is asking you to release. The Devil reminds you the chains you forged are the chains you can unforge. Hard cards arrive as growth invitations, never warnings. Luna is explicit on this point: zero fear language, anywhere in the reading.

Where people go, and what they get

Why this beats the alternatives

There are three places people usually go for a year-ahead tarot read, and a fourth option that does what the other three don't.

OptionPriceWhat you get
Established verbal tarot reading$200+60-minute live call, no permanent record, no monthly structure, gone the moment the call ends.
Labyrinthos / app subscriptions$50/yrCard meaning library, daily push notifications, generic interpretations, not personalized to your birth date.
Etsy year-wheel PDFs$20-15012-card layout, brief paragraphs per card, no lifetime cards, no year arc, no 3-card spread guidance.
Year-Ahead Tarot by Luna$9952 pages, 13 cards (12 months + Year Card), Personality and Soul cards, full-year arc with seasonal pivot, a classic 3-card spread for asking the cards, hand-finished prose in Luna's voice, citations every page, re-readable monthly.
The lineage, a chain of individual voices

Why a real reader still matters

Tarot has always been written by hand. Arthur Edward Waite wrote The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910) as a single author's reading of the deck he commissioned from Pamela Colman Smith. Every landmark work in the tradition since has been one writer's own archetypal interpretation, one practitioner's method refined with real querents over decades. The lineage is a chain of individual voices doing the work of interpretation, not a committee aggregating opinions.

The Year-Ahead is written in that lineage. The card draw is deterministic, but the reading of the draw is the work, and the work is mine. Each month's page sits the card against your Year Card (the presiding archetype), references your Soul Card where natural, and quotes the tradition's named sources when the lineage has named the pattern most clearly. The reading mirrors, it does not foretell; and a mirror this carefully made is worth standing in front of on the first morning of every month.

Optional context for Luna

Shape your reading, three optional questions

The Year-Ahead Tarot is most useful when the deck is read against the actual shape of your life. If you'd like to share what's in front of you, a decision, your current energy, who shares your life right now, Luna will weave that context into the reading. All three questions are optional. The reading still goes deep without them.

Before we begin

Three quick questions to shape your reading

These are optional, share what you'd like. The more you tell us, the more your reading meets you where you actually are.

Optional. One sentence is enough.

How much energy do you have right now?

Optional. We'll calibrate your action steps to match.

Who shares your life right now?

Optional. Select all that apply.

The ten questions every reader asks

Frequently asked questions

What is the Year-Ahead Tarot Reading?

A 52-page personalized tarot reading. Your lifelong Personality, Soul, and Year cards are calculated via the classic tarot birth-card method, and one card is drawn for each of the 12 months ahead via a deterministic SHA-256 hash of your birth date. Every card is interpreted in Luna Ravenwood's voice, in the Rider-Waite-Smith archetypal tradition.

Why 13 cards and not just 12?

The 12 monthly cards are the weather; the Year Card is the climate. The classic tarot birth-card method calculates a single rotating Year Card from your birth date, the presiding archetype for the year. The 12 monthly draws live inside that larger archetype. Every monthly section references the Year Card so the reading reads as one piece.

How is this different from a tarot app or an Etsy year wheel?

Tarot apps give you card meanings; Etsy wheels give you a 12-card draw. The Year-Ahead Tarot does both, but at the depth of a 52-page hand-finished reading, with the Year, Personality, and Soul cards systematically run, a classic three-card spread taught for asking the cards about a specific theme, and Luna's voice carried across every page. It is built to be re-read each month, not consulted once.

Is the draw random, could I just shuffle myself?

The draw is deterministic, the same buyer with the same birth date receives the same 12 cards every time. This is the editorial promise: Luna's reading does not change between Tuesday and Wednesday. Different buyers receive different draws. The interpretation is what makes the reading meaningful, not the draw.

How do feared cards (The Tower, Death, the Devil) appear?

Reframed as growth invitations, never warnings. The Tower is the truth-revealing card, what falls was already falling. Death is transformation, never literal, what your year is asking you to release. The Devil reminds you the chains you forged are the chains you can unforge. Luna is explicit on this point: zero fear language, anywhere in the reading.

Can I order a Year-Ahead for someone else as a gift?

Yes. You provide the recipient's name and birth date; the PDF is addressed to them by name. The PDF arrives by email, so you can forward it or print a copy to give in person.

Will the reading work for any year, including past years?

The reading is written for the current or upcoming year. You can order a Year-Ahead for 2027 in advance, the Year Card calculation and monthly draws are date-deterministic and work for any year ahead.

Why $99 when a live tarot reading costs $200 or more?

A 60-minute verbal reading with an established tarot service runs $200+ and happens once, leaving no record. App subscriptions ($50/yr) give you generic card meanings with no personalization. Etsy year-wheels ($20-150) give you a 12-card layout with brief paragraphs. The Year-Ahead is 52 hand-finished pages, 13 cards including your lifelong Personality, Soul, and Year cards, a full-year arc with the seasonal pivot named, and a classic 3-card spread taught for the year's real questions, in writing, re-readable on the first morning of every month.

How do I order, and how is it delivered?

Order now at $99. Share your name and birth date, then check out through secure Stripe. The 52-page reading is hand-finished and delivered as a PDF you keep, re-readable on the first morning of every month.
