What is the Last Quarter?

The Last Quarter Moon is half-lit again, but now the darkness is growing rather than the light. Tradition holds this as the lunation's release threshold, the moment to commit to letting go of what the cycle has shown is finished.

The phase

What this phase honors

  • Release, the cycle's commitment to letting go
  • Forgiveness, including of yourself, including of small things
  • Structural clearing, physical, energetic, relational
  • The growing dark as fertile ground, not loss
Selene's reading

Selene's reading

The Last Quarter Moon is the lunation cycle's deliberate release threshold. Roughly seven days after the Full Moon, the half-illumination is now growing dark, a mirror of the First Quarter, but in reverse. Dane Rudhyar called this phase 'crisis in consciousness', the moment the cycle's lesson asks for an embodied act of release.

Selene reads the Last Quarter as the body's permission to let go. The cycle suggests this is the moment to commit to releasing one specific thing, not many, just one, that this cycle has shown is finished. The release can be physical (clearing a drawer), relational (ending a conversation that needs ending), or symbolic (writing on paper and burning).

Many lunar-ritual traditions (Boland, the Farrars, Pyle) mark the Last Quarter as the cycle's most active release window. Place your Black Tourmaline in the cleared space afterward. The growing dark is not emptiness; it is fertile ground for the next New Moon's seed.

The practice

Ritual practice (described, not prescribed)

The Last Quarter is the lunation cycle's structural release point, the mirror of the First Quarter. If the First Quarter is 'crisis in action,' the Last Quarter is 'crisis in consciousness' (Rudhyar). Practitioners often mark this phase by choosing one specific thing to release, a habit, a story, a possession, a grudge, and performing a deliberate release ritual: writing the thing on paper, then burning, shredding, burying, or composting it.

Many traditions pair the Last Quarter with physical clearing: one drawer cleaned out, one folder of email archived, one closet edited. The body's external space becomes a mirror of the internal release.

Journaling prompt

What is one thing that has served its purpose this cycle and is now ready to be released, and what does the act of release actually look like for me?

Black Tourmaline

Black Tourmaline is the structuring, protective stone of deliberate release. Hold it during the release ritual; place it in the cleared space afterward as a guardian.

Body and cycle

The Last Quarter thins things out. Spaces get cleared, conversations get finished, what has run its course gets quietly set down. Ask what you have already stopped wanting and simply have not said so yet. The moon's rhythm asks us to read that as the cycle's wisdom rather than restlessness.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about the Last Quarter

When is the Last Quarter Moon?

The Last Quarter Moon falls roughly seven days after the Full Moon, when the Moon has traveled 270Β° from the Sun. The Moon is half-lit on the left side (from the Northern Hemisphere).

What should I release at the Last Quarter?

Many practitioners use the Last Quarter to release one specific thing rather than many, the focused release is often more honest than a sweeping inventory. Choose something that this cycle has clearly shown has run its course.

Is the Last Quarter the same as a release ritual?

The Last Quarter is the lunation's natural release window. The Full Moon also has release work, but the Full Moon's release is the first naming; the Last Quarter is the deliberate letting-go.
