On a car plate 8 (八) is the most wanted digit because it sounds like 發 (fā), to prosper. In the Ba Zhai pair method 8 also forms stable and auspicious pairs, so a plate that closes on an 8 reads well. It is the digit most associated with wealth and is why 8888 plates command a premium.
