Lunar Cycles Guide
What is waxing moon?
The waxing moon is the half of the lunar cycle when the moon appears to grow in size, from New Moon to Full Moon. In lunar ritual tradition, the waxing phase is associated with building, growing, and intention-setting toward manifestation.
The waxing moon takes about two weeks, moving through four sub-phases: Waxing Crescent (just after New), First Quarter (the half-moon halfway to Full), Waxing Gibbous (more than half full), and culminating at the Full Moon. The moon's rhythm asks us to plant during this phase, to set intentions, begin projects, and let the slowly growing light support our slowly growing aims.
The cycle keeps this rhythm even when the calendar does not. Practitioners who sleep with their curtains open have long tracked the waxing moon by its returning light alone, night by night. Yasmin Boland in Moonology describes this as the moon's invitation to align with cosmic growth. In my practice, the waxing phase is when I encourage clients to commit, to step toward, to say yes.
Awareness of the waxing moon as a phase of growth appears in nearly every traditional culture's lunar calendar, Hindu, Chinese, Mayan, Egyptian, Hebrew, Celtic. The astronomical mechanics (Earth's shadow does not cause moon phases; the changing angle of sunlight on the moon does) was understood by ancient Greek astronomers including Aristotle and Aristarchus. Modern lunar ritual practice draws on both ancient and contemporary sources, with Moonology serving as one of the most cited modern guides.
To work with the waxing moon, identify what you want to grow over the next two weeks. Set the intention near the New Moon (the start of the waxing phase) and check in with it nightly as the moon grows. The Moon Phase Today tool will tell you which phase tonight is in.
Common waxing moon practices: writing intentions in a journal, planting seeds (literal or symbolic), starting projects, beginning new habits, charging crystals under the growing moonlight. The cycle suggests this is the season of building. Many cultures honor this with rituals of commitment, small ceremonies marking what you are stepping toward.
These glossary terms are closely connected to waxing moon:
About 14-15 days, from the New Moon to the Full Moon. The exact duration varies slightly because the lunar cycle is 29.5 days, not exactly 30.
Four: Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, and the Full Moon itself (which marks the end of the waxing phase and beginning of the waning).
In tradition the moon's rhythm asks us to build, plant, begin, and commit. Use the growing light as a symbolic support for whatever you want to grow in your own life over the next two weeks.
Yes. The cycle suggests the entire waxing phase supports intention-setting, with the energy strongest near the New Moon and gradually shifting toward harvest as the Full Moon approaches.
