What is month pillar?
The Month Pillar (月柱 Yuè Zhù) is the second of the four pillars in a BaZi chart, derived from the month of birth as determined by the Solar Terms (not the lunar calendar). It represents career, vocation, and the social domain of life.
The Month Pillar's Earthly Branch is determined by which Solar Term (節氣 Jié Qì) the birth fell within. Tiger Month (寅) runs from Beginning of Spring to Awakening of Insects (roughly February 4 to March 5). Rabbit Month (卯) runs from Awakening of Insects to Pure Brightness (roughly March 5 to April 5). And so on through the twelve animal months.
Classical BaZi sources describe the Month Pillar as the most influential pillar for career and vocation analysis. The Day Master in relation to the Month Branch, whether the Month strengthens or depletes the Day Master, is a foundational BaZi interpretation question. The classical sources observe this is why precise Solar Term timing matters so much for accurate BaZi reading.
The Month Pillar concept was integrated into BaZi by Xu Zi-ping (徐子平) in the 10th century, in the Yuan Hai Zi Ping. The Solar Term boundaries for each month branch were systematized in the Han dynasty. Modern lineage holders including Joey Yap and Master Raymond Lo treat the Month Pillar as the key indicator of vocational themes in any chart.
Practitioners use the Month Pillar to read vocation, career fit, and the social domain of life. The classical reading shows the Month Pillar describes what kind of work, what scale, what visibility a person is naturally drawn toward, independent of whether they currently work in that field.
The Month Branch is also one of the most powerful Wu Xing influences on the chart. The classical sources note that whichever Wu Xing element the Month Branch carries (Tiger = Yang Wood, Snake = Yin Fire, etc.) often dominates the chart's overall balance.
