What is midheaven (mc)?
The midheaven, or MC (Medium Coeli), is the highest point of a natal chart, the cusp of the 10th house. In traditional Western astrology, it represents public identity, career direction, and the legacy a person is here to build.
The midheaven sits at the top of the chart wheel, directly opposite the Imum Coeli (IC) at the bottom. It marks the zodiac degree culminating in the sky at the exact moment and place of birth. The chart suggests the midheaven as the visible peak of your life, the role you naturally inhabit in public, the direction your ambition climbs toward, the reputation you accrue over time.
In traditional Western astrology, the midheaven is one of the four chart angles, along with the Ascendant, Descendant, and IC. According to Steven Forrest in The Inner Sky, the midheaven is not just about job titles, it points to vocational calling, the place where the chart suggests you become visible to the larger world.
The midheaven has been a primary chart angle since Hellenistic astrology systematized the twelve houses around the 2nd century BCE. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos established its association with career, status, and public life, a framing that has carried through Arabic, medieval European, and modern Western traditions. The modern psychological school adds the corrective insight that midheaven is about vocational calling, not just job titles.
To find your midheaven you need exact birth time and location, without them, this point cannot be calculated. A free birth chart tool will display the MC alongside the Ascendant and the other angles.
Astrologers read the midheaven by examining its sign, the planet that rules that sign, and any planets close to it. The chart suggests asking: what is the public role I am here to embody? A Capricorn midheaven, for instance, often correlates with positions of authority and long-game ambition; a Pisces midheaven often correlates with creative, spiritual, or service-oriented work.
These glossary terms are closely connected to midheaven (mc):
Not exactly. The chart suggests vocation, the work you are here to do, which may or may not match your current job. Many people find their midheaven describes the direction they keep returning to, even across career changes.
Your natal midheaven is fixed at birth, but transits to it (especially Saturn) often correlate with public turning points and career milestones.
Because the MC moves through all twelve signs every 24 hours, birth time pinpoints the exact zodiac degree culminating at your birth. Without it, the MC cannot be calculated.
They're opposite poles. The MC is your public peak (career, reputation), and the IC is your private root (home, family, foundation). Together they form the vertical axis of the chart.
