Feng shui reads a house number on three layers: the numerology root (add the digits and reduce to 1 to 9), the Cantonese homophone (8 sounds like 發 prosper, 4 like 死 death), and the Wu Xing element each digit carries through the He Tu (河圖) mapping. A full reading holds all three rather than relying on one.

The luckiest house number in Chinese feng shui is widely held to be one ending in or reducing to 8, because 8 sounds like 發 (fā), to prosper, and reads in numerology as wealth and ambition. Numbers reducing to 6 (smooth, family) and 9 (lasting, and elevated in Period 9) are also strongly favoured.

The most avoided house number is 4, because the digit 4 sounds like 死 (sǐ), death, in Cantonese. It is a homophone, not a verdict: in numerology the 4 root reads as stability and foundation. The avoidance is real enough to affect resale demand in some markets, but it is a sound association, not a curse.

To calculate your house number, add every digit and keep reducing until one remains. For example, 2847 becomes 2 + 8 + 4 + 7 = 21, then 2 + 1 = 3, a number 3 home. Read a unit number the same way and ignore the block or street letters, which carry no number energy.

For an apartment, the unit number you live behind is read as your primary house number, because it is the threshold of your own space. The building or block number sets a broader backdrop. When they differ, the tradition weights the unit number you actually come home to.

A number like 48 reads well by homophone (closing on prosperous 8) yet reduces to a 3 root, so the two lenses each tell part of the story.
